Autism (1 day)
Aim
A one day course designed to give learners a broad overview of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and autism, whilst considering the impact upon people and the staff supporting them.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand how autism fits on the Autistic Spectrum
- Identify the possible causes of autism and autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)
- Describe the characteristics of autism
- Examine the Triad of Impairments
- Consider the impact of autism and ASD
- Devise plans for working positively with people who have autism
Behaviours that Challenge (1/2 day).
Learning Outcomes
- Define the term challenging behaviour
- List types of behaviour that may challenge
- Identify factors influencing behaviour
- Explain how communication impacts upon behaviour
- Describe the stages of emotional arousal
- Describe techniques of de-escalation
- Suggest ways of promoting non-challenging behaviour
This course is particularly beneficial when run hand in hand with Positive Communication as a 1 day programme.
Introduction to Learning Disability (1/2 day)
Aim
A half day course looking at the nature and causes of learning disability, including consideration of the historical perspective.
The course is mapped into certificate in working with people with learning disabilities (LDAF) Induction unit.
Learning Outcomes
- Define the term learning disability & explain the continuum
- List & explain the terms commonly used to describe the degree of learning disability
- List the advantages & disadvantages of defining & categorising a person’s learning disability
- List some causes of learning disability
- List the advantages & disadvantages of knowing the cause of a person’s learning disability
- List & explain some of the negative impressions of people with learning disabilities that have been influential in the past & their effect upon people
- Define the term institutionalisation & describe its effects upon individuals
Mental Health in Learning Disability (1 day)
Aim
This full day course will enable participants to recognise how mental ill health may present in people who have learning disabilities and give them the opportunity to identify positive responses and interventions.
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the difference between mental ill health & learning disability
- Understand ASD
- List vulnerability factors for people who have learning disabilities
- Describe types and symptoms of mental disorders
- Use different measurement tools e.g. HoNOS (LD) and PAS-ADD
- Discuss therapeutic interventions within a multi-disciplinary framework
Positive Communication (1/2 day)
Learning Outcomes
- Define communication & its purpose
- Explain the factors affecting communication
- Describe how to promote effective communication
- Describe principles/practices relating to confidentiality
- Describe the principles of effective record keeping
Learning Disability and Self Harm (1/2 day)
Aim
A half day course to enable participants to explore the concept of Self – Harm within the Learning Disability setting
Learning Outcomes
- Identify associated conditions
- Discuss the vulnerability factors relating to mental health & Learning Disabilities
- Explore the themes of why people self harm
- Suggest ways of working holistically with people who of self-harm
The training can be designed to meet service requirements in a range of service settings.
Understanding Epilepsy (1 day)
Learning Outcomes
- Define Epilepsy
- Identify signs and triggers of seizures
- Identify the different types of seizures and describe possible presentation
- Describe different treatments available
- Discuss the possible impact epilepsy has on someone’s life
- Identify the ways in which you can support someone with Epilepsy
